Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula

Cancun is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo directly on the Mexican Caribbean. The Yucatan Peninsula separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean. On the peninsula there are still two other states, Campeche and Yucatan. The Yucatan Peninsula is known for its cenotes, underwater caves inside the tropical rainforest. This unique landscape arised as a result of a meteorite impact 65 million years ago, that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. So the Yucatan Peninsula with its world-renowned tourist destination Cancun has its own special charm, like to see in the pictures and videos of the trip.

InfoCancun is located in the extreme northeast of Quintana Roo. The town was developed since the 70s with the support of international private investors. The purpose was to create a highlight as a contrast to Acapulco, especially for American tourists on the Mexican Caribbean. Additional to the mainland Cancun covers a spit, which surrounds the 3,000-acre lagoon Nichupte. On the spit is located the about 20 km long hotel zone. On this narrow strip there are hotels of all sizes and categories, but especially expensive luxury hotels with all their glamour. Who wants to take a break from the luxury of the hotels, can do this by a visit to the jungle of Yucatan or in the vicinity of the hotels. Along the lagoon Nichupte you will find marinas, from where you can explore the huge lagoon with its swamps and coral reefs in boats.
